Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC advanced into the quarter finals of the Junior Cup this weekend, travelling to Ashfield Ladies RFC and coming home with a 20 - 7 win.

In the first half Old Leams were playing uphill and in to the wind, and Ashfield made the most of this. They surged forward in attack, but Old Leams held firm and some strong defending and quick thinking from scrum half Keeley Adams got them out of trouble.

Old Leams steadily worked their way up the pitch into their opponents’ 22. Ashfield held them there for a while, but eventually Carrie MacDonald broke through to score under the posts. This was converted by ‘back of the match’ Sam Smyth to put Old Leams 7 - 0 in the lead at half time.

Old Leams started the second half brightly, and continued to attack. They were soon rewarded with a try from ‘forward of the match’ Jen Vermeulen, who spotted a gap and dashed through it, to run from the half way line and score. Once again, Smyth was on hand to successfully convert.

Old Leams kept up the pressure in attack, winning the Ashfield scrum on a few occasions. This pressure led to Ashfield conceding two penalties right in front of the posts, and Smyth kicked both through the posts to put Old Leams 20 - 0 up.

However, Old Leams couldn’t keep the clean sheet, and in the last couple of minutes of the game gave away penalties deep in their half, which Ashfield capitalised on. Rather than kick for posts they went for the try, which they scored and converted, leaving the final score 20-7.
