There was penalty shoot-out heartbreak for WCT Raiders who bowed out to Grange Athletic in the semi-finals of the Worcestershire FA Sunday Premier Cup.

With Raiders home pitch under water, the tie was switched to Martley and it was Grange who made the early running. WCT goalkeeper Richie Vernon had to make saves from both Dreniz Bala and Lee Smith in the first five minutes of the match. At the other end Grange ‘keeper Joel Skeldon tipped a Jamie Insall drive over the bar for a corner. Bala then hit the side netting for Grange before WCT’s Glen Sitch saw his effort bounce off the cross bar as the first half finished goal less.

Raiders began to dominate after the break and from an exquisite through ball from Dan Polan, Insall saw his goal bound shot turned round the post by the excellent Skeldon. Craig Selby and Joel Hobbs were in dominant form at the centre of the WCT defence but Grange took the lead in the 65th minute against the run of play when Jason Townsend got behind the defence to slip the ball past Vernon.

However, within five minutes WCT were level when a deft header from Alex Baird found the corner of the net. It was all WCT now but man of the match Skeldon made two breath taking saves to deny Polan before the game went into extra-time.

On a rapidly deteriorating pitch, WCT found the net twice through Selby and Martin Newman, but both efforts were ruled offside. Neither side was able to find a winner in the heavy conditions and the match went into the inevitable penalty shoot-out. However, only  Newman was able to find the net for WCT, as Skeldon increased his reputation with three further fine saves as Grange went through to the final 3-1 on kicks from the spot.

Both teams can be proud of the effort they displayed in extremely challenging conditions with the pitch resembling a [censored] field by the end of the match.

In the only match that started in the McDonald’s Worcester & District Football League, Foregate were drawing 2-2 with the University of Worcester when the heavens opened. Thunder and lightning followed and the Saturday Division fixture had to be abandoned after 48 minutes as the pitch became waterlogged. Mike Tattersfield and Jamie Wharf were on target for Foregate with Macloud Moyo and Alistair Broome replying for the students.
