Worcestershire County League

Summary of results Saturday 8th August 2015

Nearly into the home straight and another beautiful day dawned in Worcestershire. Divisions 5-7 started back with the draw option but almost all were clear cut results

In Division One 1st XIs, leaders Pershore lost for just the second time but were able to hold onto almost all of their massive lead as second placed Nomads also slipped.

Pershore had a rare “off day” and were not up to a modest run chase at Belbroughton and Nomads were restricted by a keen attack that included 5-45 from Max Backhouse and did not make enough runs. So it was Droitwich who stole the headlines with a resounding win at Burghill and it is they who have now forced their way back into second place, 2 points ahead of Nomads. As Droitwich must play both Pershore and Nomads in remaining games, could they yet upset the favourites and snatch the title?

The other matches all involved clubs engaged in the desperate attempt to stave off relegation and 8th placed Burghill are surely almost safe despite losing to Droitwich. They have a 36 point cushion above the bottom quartet; headed by Redditch on 141 who were heavily beaten at home by Bewdley despite Tom Field scoring 104 not out. Next are Bromyard, who lost at home to rivals Oldswinford to leave then standing on 136 points, just 5 behind Redditch but also 5 in front of Oldswinford.

Finally, Pedmore’s plight is also darkening as they returned to the bottom, 7 adrift of Oldswinford after they lost at Hagley. Next week Pershore play local rivals Redditch and their vanquishers, Belbroughton must go to Nomads hoping to record a double. Droitwich are at 4th placed Bewdley hoping that Redditch can help them at Pershore.

In Division Two 1st XIs, Bredon and Cookley surely played out one of the games of the season, certainly one that may grace Division One next year, with Bredon ending up victorious by just three runs at the end of 100 pulsating overs. They batted first and racked up 289-7 from their overs but Cookley had Jamien Rudd (114) and Jon Stanaway (103) to thank once again as they chased hard for the victory ending up agonisingly close. Bredon now have a 19 point lead over Cookley who are just 2 in front of Stourport after the latter crushed Enville by 10 wickets in fewer than 25 overs.

Dominies are clinging on in 4th after they won at Harborne but Coombs Wood’s challenge may now be over following a loss at Lye. Feckenham beat Malvern and Wormelow beat Evesham in mid table.

Next week, Bredon visit Coombs Wood and Cookley host Wormelow whilst Stourport will have a stiff test at Worcester Dominies in the final win/lose matches for Divs 1-4.

In Division Three 1st XIs, leaders Himbleton  beat Avoncroft thanks to 131 from Jon Critchlow, second placed Chaddesley kept up the pressure just 2 points back by beating Cleobury despite 127 scored by Ben Griffiths and they stay 1 point on front of Alvechurch who beat bottom placed Alveley thanks to Ed Rogers’ 104.

These three are almost two wins ahead of Netherton in 4th, who beat Rushwick easily, and Bartestree are 5th following a home defeat to Claverley for whom Jamie Greenwood took 5-37. Finally Old Vigornians beat Ross on Wye.

Division Four 1st XIs – Kempsey saw off Bromsgrove’s challenge with 94 scored by Sam O’Neill following his week’s holiday and Barnards Green took second place back after they thrashed Harvington. Fourth placed Kidderminster were beaten by Hanley Castle, Fiveways beat Halesowen to go 5th (naturally) and Martley are 6th thanks to Dominic Jones’ 137 in the win over Oldswinford.

The final match saw a run fest at Himley as the home side made 316-9 in their 50 overs and then just held Old Hill at bay as they notched 312-3 in theirs. For Old Hill, John Preece was left on 99 not out.

Division Five 1st XIs – Stourport, victors at Tenbury, still lead by 5 points from Astwood Bank who beat Stourbridge.

Tenbury are now 33 points behind in 3rd after their defeat and West Malvern are 4th following a win over Hallow in which Steve Wright contributed 86 and Matt Hindmarsh took 5-50.

In the other games, Barnt Green beat Redditch and OEs trounced Enville.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one leaders Stourport remain 42 points in front of Nomads after both posted victories. Stourport’s was over Enville with Spencer Colley making an incredible 157 not it from their total of 203-1.

The batsmen were happiest at Bransford where Worcester Nomads chased 356 for victory against visitors Colwall thanks to 108 scored by skipper Tim Dobinson-Law. The bowlers’ figures were not pretty in this match as Henry Coleman had earlier pillaged 123 from just 29 balls including six sixes in one over.

Colwall are 3rd, 40 points adrift of Nomads and a staggering 82 in arrears of Stourport who they meet in the final match of the season, by which time everything should be settled. Hagley, who are joint 4th, beat their neighbours Pedmore thanks to James Spavin making 103 not out and Evesham’s Khurram Mumtaz scored 98 as his side beat Belbroughton to join Hagley in 4th.

In the other games, Bewdley beat Redditch and Netherton beat Rushwick.

In Division two, Pershore became the first side to register 300 points, after their 1sts slipped and they accounted for 11th placed Alvechurch.

Bromyard are now 58 points back after they lost again, this time at Feckenham and there were wins for Harborne at Avoncroft, Droitwich over Burghill and Coombs Wood over Lye thanks to Jason Clifford making 106 not out.

In the final match, Bredon completed the club double over Cookley on the day by defeating them by 35 runs.

In Division three 2nds the leaders Oldswinford stayed 41 points in front by beating Malvern and Wormelow in 2nd  racked up 367-4 in their overs before dismissing Alveley for 98. For Wormelow, Matt Deem scored 149.

Kidderminster stay just 3 behind Wormelow, following a win at Old Vigornians and now stand 33 points in front them.

The other games saw wins for Bartestree over Claverley thanks to Jack Summerside’s 118 not out and Chaddesley beat Bromsgrove Finally, Himley beat Dominies to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom two.

Division four 2nds leaders Five Ways beat 4th placed Halesowen whilst Kempsey were losing to Cleobury Mortimer thanks to 207 not out scored by Ed Kemp. This has enabled Himbleton, for whom Andy Street scored 115 to overtake them by beating Old Hill who are bottom of the division.

Barnards Green were without a match so slip to 5th and Hanley beat Ross and Oldswinford overcame Martley in the final games.

Division five 2nds Stourport are continuing the marvellous season the club are having (top of three divisions and third in the other) after they beat second placed Tenbury to open up a 29 point gap.

Stourbridge had a rare winning draw over Astwood Bank as Jasper Davidson cracked 107 not out and Dominic O’Reilly took 5-70.

In other games, a youthful Barnt Green beat Redditch, OEs beat Enville and Hallow won for only the second time, beating West Malvern

Division Six, leaders Cutnall Green were without a match but second placed Birlingham lost at home to Ombersley. This enabled Harborne to climb into second by defeating Romsley and they are now 28 points behind Cutnall Green.

Hagley are 4th after beating Highley with Rav Sandhu making 110 not out and Nomads beat Netherton to stay just in front of Ombersley. A total of 8 points cover the sides in 5th-8th.

Division Seven North leaders Droitwich could not quite force the win at home to Fiveways OEs so had to settle for 18 points so they have been joined at the top by Coombs Wood who thrashed Belbroughton to go top with 3 to play and this could not have been timed better as the two teams meet next week.

Stone are 3rd following a win at Cookley and Harborne were gifted 24 points by Romsley who conceded so they are 5th. Bewdley beat Pedmore to complete the set of results.

Division Seven South – Pershore stay 38 points in front of Worcester, after making the long journey to Bartestree and winning which made the journey home seem shorter.

Worcester themselves beat 3rd paced Ombersley Taverners by just one wicket, Kidderminster beat Evesham and finally Droitwich beat Bromyard.
