Worcestershire County League

Summary of results Saturday 9th May 2015

A good day to win the toss with several first innings’ being concluded early yet some sides managed maximum 24 points by battling through and then turning the screw on their opponents. We had the season’s first tie and some handy bowling figures.

In Division One 1st XIs, early leaders Droitwich, who might have been some people’s relegation favourites, again confounded their critics, beating Oldswinford by 3 wickets in a low scoring affair. They are now level on points with Worcester Nomads who were inserted on a green pitch by Pedmore and yet won due to a fine all round bowling and fielding performance.

The season’s previous other double winners, Colwall, lost at Bewdley and have been pushed down a place by their unbeaten hosts as a result. For Bewdley, Simon Mauger scored 91 not out. Bewdley are 18 points behind the joint leaders and 2 ahead of Colwall. Pershore won their first match of the campaign and have jumped to 5th place as a result of shrewd signing spinner Taylor Pugh who joins them from Brockhampton 1sts and who took 5-61 for his new side on his debut against 7th placed Hagley.

In the matches affecting the other end of the table, Burghill lifted themselves off the bottom to 8th with a narrow win over 6th placed Belbroughton who are 6 points adrift of Pershore in mid-table. The final match saw Bromyard nearly record their first win for quite a while as they halted a run of two defeats with a winning draw at home to Redditch to lift themselves out of the relegation positions. Their visitors on the other hand have little to celebrate as they recorded a second draw which leaves them last.

Droitwich receive Bromyard next week hoping to maintain their promising start and Nomads go to Hagley, Bewdley visit Belbroughton and Pershore travel to Colwall.

In Division Two 1st XIs –leaders Cookley won at home to Coombs Wood with six wickets coming from Danny Soley in the visitors’ innings and Bredon kept up the pressure on them by narrowly defeating Worcester Dominies after being inserted to stand just 3 points behind.

Next come Stourport, 10 points behind Bredon, who had Lee Waldron’s six wickets to thank for their success. Lye are next, just ahead of Dominies following a 6 wickets win at Evesham and then Wormelow who won at Enville.

The final match at Malvern saw no play due to rain. Next week Cookley visit Lye and Bredon entertain near neighbours Evesham to their longest trip of the season.

In Division Three 1st XIs – Avoncroft were knocked off top spot, losing at home to Chaddesley and it is Cleobury who take over following their third win in the defeat of Claverley. Netherton’s thrashing of Himbleton sees them jump to 2nd place, 8 behind Cleobury, 1 point in front of Bartestree who won at Alveley and 2 ahead of Avoncroft.

Rushwick earned their first win of the season as a club and Ross and Alvechurch failed to start, which effectively drops Alvechurch a couple of places.

Division Four 1st XIs – Himley faultered at Martley and so last season’s Division Five champions, Kempsey, continue to lead the table after Zak O‘Neill made 112 in their win at Old Hill.

Barnards Green climb to 2nd after a win at home to Halesowen and Kidderminster go 3rd by beating Harvington in a high scoring match. Bromsgrove are 4th thanks to a 3 wickets win at home to Fiveways with 6 wickets from Chris Burford and this despite 101 not out from Dave Potter and five wickets taken by Jon Bassett for the visitors.

In the other match, Oldswinford came off the foot of the table by defeating Hanley Castle. Next week Kempsey host second placed Barnards Green and Bromsgrove visit Himley.

Division Five 1st XIs – again had no draws. Astwood Bank again got maximum points, this time at Enville, Tenbury won for the second week running maybe for quite a long time, this time at Hallow thanks to a return of 8-27 from Mark Yarranton. Stourport beat OEs despite Steve Walsh scoring 89 for the old boys, and West Malvern had an easy win at Barnt Green.

The final game was a victory for Redditch by 26 runs over Stourbridge having only made a meagre 74 themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one, Colwall and Bewdley drew with Henry Coleman scoring 152 for Colwall and Connor Franklin making 103 in reply. This has allowed Stourport to close the gap on Colwall to 3 points by beating Rushwick by one wicket and Pedmore held Nomads back to 3rd place, another thre points back, after John Smith made 103 in their first innings total of 307-6 to which Nomads’ Jamie Oliver then contributed 141 out of their total of 285-4.

Redditch beat Netherton, Enville had Trevor Spears’ 6 wickets to thank for their success at Belbroughton and Evesham beat Hagley,

In Division two, Coombs Wood and Harborne are the new joint leaders after Burghill slipped up at Alvechurch and Bromyard had no answer to Ian Powick, of Harborne’s 106 in his side’s 157 runs victory.

Coombs Wood saw off Cookley, Avoncroft beat Bredon and Pershore beat Lye with the final match between Droitwich and Feckenham ending in a draw.

In Division three 2nds Wormelow are now well out in front by a massive 15 points after three rounds after they thrashed Kidderminster. Dominies stand in 2nd after a win at Chaddesley and then come Bartestree who beat Alveley.

In 4th place, Oldswinford could only draw with Old Vigornians and further down the table, Bromsgrove beat Claverley, and Himley accounted for Malvern.

Division four 2nds have three sides with three wins each after Halesowen beat Barnards Green, Kempsey beat Old Hill despite 81 from Matt Davenport and Five ways were too strong for Cleobury Mortimer.

Himbleton beat Martley, Hanley beat Oldswinford and Ross had their match conceded by Harvington.

Division five 2nds – two clubs have won two out of two, Astwood Bank, who rushed out Enville after Martin Brookes had made 96 for ABCC, and Tenbury who beat Hallow. West Malvern, winners at home to Barnt Green thanks to 100 from Leston Blackburn to add to last week’s concession and Stourport who drew with OEs are sandwiched in between Astwood Bank and Tenbury.

In the last match, Redditch beat Stourbridge.

Division Six, has Romsley at the summit adding a win to last week’s conceded win with Liam Moore scoring 121 not out against 8 man Ombersley. Highley also have a concession to add to last week’s win and are 4 points behind Romsley and 4 ahead of Birlingham who have had to play both matches this week adding a winning draw at Netherton.

Harborne are 4th following a win over Cutnall Green and at Blakedown, Hagley’s Mathew McCabe found the pitch and Nomads fragile batting to his liking as he took 5-8 in just 7 overs as the visitors were bundled out for just 26.

Division Seven North had another victory for Droitwich, who lead the table after Harborne and Coombs Wood, victors last week played out a tie with both sides scoring 82 all out.

Stone are 4th after a winning draw at home to Pedmore for whom Joe Hill, formerly of Redditch, made 148.Bewdley beat Belbroughton and Cookley took the points at Fiveways OEs

Division Seven South – had second wins for Worcester and Kidderminster against Bartestree and a concession from Malvern respectively.

Pershore thrashed seven man Evesham and Ombersley Taverners had their first win against Droitwich with John Allen scoring 80.. In the last match Bromyard thrashed Bredon.
