Worcestershire County League

Summary of results Saturday 23rd April 2016

It may have been the Bard’s birthday, but it was a “Winter’s tale” and bitterly cold everywhere as we began our 18th season of pyramid league cricket. The overseas recruits were not deterred by the cold so 2016 may prove to be a “Midsummer night’s dream”, as most games were won or lost despite the draws being available.

In Division One 1st XIs, all six matches ended in positive results as Colwall registered 24 points at Bewdley by chasing down the home side’s 231-5, including 110 from Bewdley’ s Australian overseas bat, Charlie Eastoe, as Colwall’ s home grown Herefordshire farmer, Tom Coleman, replied with 126 not out in his side’s victory chase. Next come Hagley who thrashed Oldswinford by 131 runs.

Worcester’s Clark Knapton reduced Pedmore from 52-1 in pursuit of the home side’s 172 all out to a disappointing 69 all out, thanks to his haul of 6-10 and Nomads recovered from 133-6 thanks to Tariq Jamil and Oli Swift to total the division’s highest of 263-8 and then to rush out Burghill, Tillington & Weobley for 93 in under 25 overs.

Those four sides all standing on 24 points are followed by Belbroughton who defeated newcomers Stourport off the final delivery and Cookley, another first time Division One side who absolutely annihilated Droitwich, last season’s 3rd placed finishers, dismissing them for 43 in under 16 overs to win their first top flight match by a comfortable 9 wickets in 6.4 overs and send a shiver down the spines of the division.

In Division Two 1st XIs, had one drawn game but maximum 24 points went to newly promoted Chaddesley, who appeared to have recruited well as Bilal Hassan formerly of Stourbridge piled on 133 of his side’s 339-5 to defeat visiting Enville comprehensively. Lye scored almost as many in defeating Coombs Wood, Redditch’s overseas South African, Cody Poole, cracked an impressive 92 to help his side’s first Division two match end with victory over Evesham, despite 6-55 from James Crennan and Dominies’ Chris Miles made 106 not out to  win their match with Bromyard despite 6-40 from Martin Reece.

So as in Division One, those four winning sides share the lead on 24 points and then it was Feckenham’s Tom Coulson’s 6-42 that propelled his team to a 20 point win over Bredon.

Finally, the drawn match was at Alvechurch where another overseas batsman, Australian Lachlan Hartley scored 91 for Wormelow to back up Matt Deem’s 120 as the visitors made 301-5. In reply new Captain Adam Markham-Jones stood firm on 67 as his Alvechurch side held out, just, at 180-9.

In Division Three 1st XIs, Avoncroft top the alphabetical sides who took 24 points by beating, in their case, Barnards Green 3rds. Bartestree’ s Australian Ben Chaplin was certainly no “Charlie” as he smote 106 at Rushwick to win the day and Ross had new skipper Harry Porter’s knock of 141 not out and a final wicket stand of 123 with Stuart Mair to thank for their defeat of new boys Kempsey for whom Adam Hunabun’s 5-53 had earlier reduced the home side to 109-9.

Old Vigornians match at Worcester was conceded by Cleobury and investigations will be ongoing about the circumstances surrounding that decision as Cleobury did play the 2nd XI fixture.

In the other games, Harborne’s teenage Charlie Grice took 5-26 as they beat Himbleton and Netherton skipper registered 67 as his side defeated Malvern.

In Division Four 1st XIs, one match was abandoned and the leaders with 24 points are Bromsgrove 3rds who defeated Oldswinford 3rds. Joint top are also Martley, who beat Halesowen and then come three sides on 20 points, Fiveways OEs who beat Hanley easily, Kidderminster who had a high scoring match on the small pitch at Chester Road. For Himley, Kris Green made 103 not out and Matt Bowen 102 and in reply, James Williams notched 89 not out for the home side and was supported by the ageless Godfrey Lamb who made 83.In the final match, Stourport saw off Calverley.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one started off with victories for all top five sides of last season, plus new boys Worcester! Champions Stourport won at Belbroughton with record breaker Spencer Colley racking up another 82 not out, Nomads beat Netherton with seventies for Jamie Oliver and Joe Laugher, Hagley beat Coombs Wood, Worcester’s Craig Oakley helped himself to 81 not out in their win over Pedmore and Redditch beat Evesham despite 92 scored by Evesham captain Nasir Mehmood.

All these winners notched 20 points but this just left one side to record the full 24 and this was Colwall who beat Bewdley by 15 runs despite Grant Morris taking 6-26 for Bewdley.

In Division two, Feckenham achieved a maximum with Mohammed Idrees taking 105 from the Burghill attach, Bromyard had an easy success over Rushwick, Wormelow cruised past Avoncroft with skipper David Bannerman scoring 109 and Cookley beat Droitwich.

In the other game played, Harborne drew with Enville mainly thanks to the 164 scored by Usman Sajid.

In Division three 2nds Bredon, Kidderminster and Dominies all recorded 24 point wins against Claverley, Kempsey and Bartestree respectively with the stand out performance being Simon Trickett’s 197 for Kidderminster, however, Mike Hickey of Bredon weighed in with 98 in their win.

In the other matches, Bromsgrove beat Old Vigornians on Bromsgrove’s unexpectedly available main ground and Chaddesley Corbett beat Fiveways Old Edwardians.

Division four 2nds saw six more wins as Astwood Bank defeated Barbards Green by two wickets, Himey thrashed Ross with Jack Lewis making 101 not out, Oldswinford thumped Cleobury and Stourport beat Malvern. All four victors get 24 points

In the final games Himbleton got 20 points for beating Hanley and John McGahan scored 102 out of Martley’s 141 all out but this was easily surpassed by Halesowen.
