Worcestershire County Cricket League

Summary of results Saturday 31st May 2014

Welcome back after last week’s enforced absence, inevitable after the previous week’s great but short-lived weather.

This time the scores reflected the damp conditions and although most games went ahead, a lot of sides that won the toss batted second and won after a struggle, however, a total of 7 matches did not start (out of 76).

In Division One 1st XIs, Pershore are still at 100% of games played after six matches after they thrashed bottom side Redditch, still looking for an elusive first win at the end of the first win/lose section of games.

Pershore were inserted and Liam Ridings carried his bat for 104 in difficult conditions to steer his side to the top score in Division One of 232-3. In reply, Redditch had no answer to, fit again Luke Dalley, who tore through the middle order to return figures of 5-31 and rout the home side for 88.

Two weeks ago it was Colwall who had just surrendered top spot to Pershore, after they tied with Nomads, but yesterday they became Evesham’s first victims of the season as the ex Birmingham League team beat them by 3 wickets, thanks to an all round effort that has lifted them clear of the relegation area.

Pedmore are now fifth and they surrendered third spot as Worcester beat them comfortably to climb to second, 16 points behind Pershore and Worcester Nomads have taken over in third but only after winning by a single run at Droitwich, ending the match with just eight fit players. Nomads are a further 6 points back and start the win/lose/draw section of the season next week at home to leaders Pershore.

So Colwall in fourth, are 26 points ahead of Hagley in sixth, who won their second match to continue the agony for ambitious Bromyard who now sit with Redditch in the bottom two places, almost 80 points from the summit. Yesterday, Hagley were one of very few sides who won the toss and batted and with all of Bromyard’s six bowlers taking at least one wicket they were restricted to 132 all out in fewer than 45 overs. Sadly, for Bromyard, their batting woes continued and once again only 16 years old Ian Bullock made over 10 as they lasted for ten fewer overs in making 76 with Hagley’s mean Lee Maggs taking 4-13 in his 10 overs.

The final match at Harvington was abandoned with no play as a result of the dreadful recent rain but this was particularly hard on visitors Belbroughton who have lost 4 out of 6 games to the weather so far.

So three sides are without a win but this may alter next week when Harvington travel to Bromyard. Elsewhere, Worcester host Redditch.

Division Two 1st XIs – at the end of the first batch of win/lose fixtures, there are four wins out of six for both Oldswinford and Bewdley as Cookley slipped at home to new third placed side Burghill by two wickets.

Oldswinford are top, one point ahead of Bewdley after they demolished Rushwick by 9 wickets and Bewdley had a narrow 17 runs victory at Lye.

The Worcester Dominies’ Miles brothers, Steve and Chris made 122 and 87 not out (following Chris’s 171* two weeks ago for the 2nds) respectively as they won easily at Enville and they are now fourth, 19 points off the top place.

In the other games, Malvern and Coombs Wood both won for the first time, beating Wormelow and Feckenham respectively. Coombs Wood won by just one wicket at bottom side Feckenham with a last wicket stand of 10 after Carl Whyte had made 83.

Next week, Bewdley entertain Cookley and Oldswinford and Stourbridge Social travel to Wormelow whilst Dominies entertain local rivals Rushwick.

Division Three 1st XI – has another new leading side after Chaddesley Corbett’s Mohammed Saddiq returned the season’s best figures to date of 8-15 to skittle winless Alveley, all out for just 51. Netherton are one point behind Chaddesley, after they lost at home by just two runs to Stourport with both sides losing 9 wickets in their 50 overs.

Bredon are themselves just a further point back in third after a five wicket triumph over Tenbury and Harborne stand fourth, another solitary point behind, following a win at home to Alvechurch and they are yet another single point ahead of Stourport in fifth, who are therefore themselves just 4 behind leaders Chaddesley!!

Last time they played Avoncroft’s openers were not parted as they racked up 419 against Tenbury. However, what a difference was seen yesterday as they were dismissed at Cleobury for 85 to lose by 123 after inserting Cleobury Mortimer. The final game saw a 2nd victory for Ross over OVs.

Division Four 1st XIs – has another close group at the top as former leaders Bromsgrove and Claverley both lost. Halesowen accounted for Bromsgrove who are now joint second with Claverley as they now sit 3 behind Bartestree who beat them comfortably with the day’s highest total of 332 all out thanks to 123 from Nick Firth and 5-28 from Ben Simpkin then reduced Claverley to 160 all out in just 33 overs.

Behind these three are Himbleton, 3 points back, who beat Oldswinford and Stourbridge Social’s 3rds thanks to 93 not out from Richard Pretty.

Five Ways and Martley both recorded their second victories, beating Old Hill 3rds and the winless Himley 3rds respectively and in the final game Kidderminster 3rds recorded a nine wickets success at home to Romsley and Hunnington.

Division Five 1st XIs still have two unbeaten sides after five rounds, Barnards Green for whom, Rob Tyler made 92 in their win against Barnt Green, and Kempsey who thrashed Astwood Bank 3rds to stay joint top.

Stourport are third after beating Old Elizabethans and Barnt Green are 4th following a win at home to Hallow. In the final match West Malvern and Stourbridge fell victims to the weather.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one is now led solely by Colwall who have won all games played. Yesterday they thrashed Evesham and now lead Stourport and Worcester Nomads by 13 points after Pedmore won at Stourport and nomads held off Droitwich.

Pedmore are 3rd just 3 points back and one behind them is Rushwick who slid to defeat at home to Redditch for whom Jack Roberson made 83. Bewdley are next after a win over Hagley and the picture was competed by Belbroughton’s narrow defeat at home to Cookley.

Droitwich are the only side without a win.

In Division two, Enville still lead the way after defeating the Dominies who now are in 4th place, with Alvechurch 2nd, 20 points behind Enville after a tight two wicket win over Harborne and Feckenham are third as thanks to Richard Harris, they beat winless Coombs Wood.

Elsewhere, Pershore beat Oldswinford thanks to a century from Alexander Brown in reply to Oldswinford’s declared total that included 91 scored by Ian Hatton. Also, Netherton lost at Worcester and Bromyard and Lye were rained off.

Division three 2nd XI – Bredon march on also having won all matches played and they lead Avoncroft by 11 points despite being rained off at Romsley and Avoncroft closed the gap by defeating Himley with 152 scored from the bat of Mark Whitehead.

Burghill had a narrow win over Harvington and Chaddesley thrashed winless Alveley to stay 3rd and 4th respectively. Elsewhere, Claverley beat Bartestree by 9 wickets and Malvern’s Chay Ankers took 6-8 from his 10 overs, including a hat-trick to send Wormelow tumbling to defeat.

Division four 2nds saw victories for leaders Martley and Old Vigornians who both stay top with 90 points having won 4 and had 2 matches off so far. Martley beat Cleobury Mortimer and Ovs beat Ross on Wye.

In other matches, Kidderminster stayed third, two behind the top two after a convincing 181 runs win at Tenbury and Five Ways scored an equally impressive victory over Old Hill and stand 4th.

Bromsgrove come next following a win over Halesowen and finally Himbleton are in 6th due to beating Oldswinford and Stourbridge Social 4ths. In this division the top half sides now have a 31 points gap between them and the bottom half.

Division five 2nds Stourport beat OEs to go clear of them at the top with 96 from veteran Neil Waldron and Barnards Green jumped to 3rd place by beating Hanley Castle. West Malvern stand 4th after winning at Stourbridge who are 5th and Astwood Bank defeated Kempsey comfortably.

Hallow won their first match beating Barnt Green and they plus Hanley and Kempsey are the three sides without a win at the end of the Win/Lose section

In Division six, Birlingham and Canon Frome remain at the summit, recording convincing wins at Droitwich and Rushwick respectively.

In other games, Ombersley beat Netherton, Stone got their first win of the season over Cutnall Green and Highley beat Harborne.

Division seven’s Worcester Nomads lost to Belbroughton and thus surrender the Division’s top to them in the process. There were only two other matches played which had wins for Pershore who scuttled Enville for 30 (top score 9) and Hagley who bowled out 10 men Malvern for just nnn 19, (top score 4 not out).

Division Eight saw victories for joint leaders Bewdley, Colwall and Evesham over Cookley, Kidderminster and Worcester Dominies with Bromyard the other victors over Harborne.

Division Nine saw a win for Harvington in their debut match and they lead the table. Bromyard thrashed Feckenham with centuries for Dan Masters and Mike Reece and they are 4 points behind in 2nd. Bredon and Redditch were becalmed by weather and the last match saw a win for Five Ways, their third in one day over Alvechurch.

The KO Cups have managed to catch up a bit of late, thanks partly to a couple of bowl outs and in the 1st XIs North Semi-finals scheduled for this coming week, Avoncroft will entertain Enville and Coombs Wood receive Lye. In the South final a week on Tuesday Worcester Nomads will host Pershore.

The 2nd XI competition has not yet started in the South but in the North the semis, planned for this week are Belbroughton vs. Old Hill and Pedmore vs. Hagley.
