RUGBY has captured the imagination of the Leicestershire market town of Melton Mowbray ahead of the local club’s RFU Senior Vase semi-final against West Leeds on Saturday April 4.

Melton Mowbray won the Midlands Senior Vase earlier this month when they beat county rivals Vipers in the regional final and they are now just one match from an appearance at Twickenham.

“I work as builder and when I go down the builders’ merchants or in the local shop people are talking about Saturday’s match,” said Melton Mowbray captain Marcus Badham.

“We have played most of our cup games away from home but our support has been outstanding. We had a lot of support for the Midlands final at Vipers and we expect a big crowd against West Leeds.

“A lot of the parents of players in our mini and junior section have very supportive. They normally come down on Sundays to do stuff with the kids but they have really got behind us on Saturdays.

“Socially, the club is now rammed on Saturday afternoons and for any event.”

Apart from securing the Midlands Senior Vase, Melton Mowbray have also won the Midlands Three East (North) title having been relegated 12 months ago.

“We struggled last season and a number of lads who live in the town were playing their rugby for other clubs,” Badham said.

“I went abroad for a year and then I was at South Leicester as well. A lot of us were socialising in Melton so we got our heads together and decided we should play for our local club and try to make something of it.”

Badham has helped to turn round Melton’s fortunes at league level and but admits that West Leeds, the North champions, will be an unknown quantity.

“We know very little about them. We had someone who works in their area who went to watch them but we are not too sure what to expect from them,” he said.

“But we are all at the same level at the end of the day so we will just try to play our game.”
