Stratford Retain Inter-League Charity Cup for Summer League

Inter League Charity Cup Final

The Inter-League Charity Cup Tennis Final took place at HDA Tennis Club, Redditch last Sunday between Stratford-on-Avon representing the South Warwickshire Summer League and Leamington Spa representing the Stratford and District Winter League.

The balls were supplied by "Inspire2Coach" based at Warwick University.

This is the twelfth year of this competition between the two leagues the winners of which decide the fate of the £100 cheque donated by the leagues. Summer League Champions Stratford fielded their four players Callum Bailey partnered by Club Coach Graham Adams while Cameron Malik was teamed up with Chris Marrow. Stratford's normal captain Tim Page was unavailable. For the Winter League Leamington fielded captain Andy Cowden & Will Pendred, while Paul Raynor partnered Neil Gildove.

There followed some excellent close tennis especially in the opening rubbers between Stratford's Malik & Marrow against Leamington's Raynor & Gildove before the Stratford pair came from behind to win 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) on a championship tie-break. On the other court Stratford's Bailey & Adams got the upper hand triumphing over Cowden & Pendred 6-1, 6-3. So at the halfway point in the match Stratford led 2-0.

After the change Stratford's Malik & Marrow stepped up a gear to beat Leamington's Cowden & Pendred comfortably 6-2, 6-1 and give Stratford an unassailable 3-0 lead. On the other court Bailey & Adams fought back after losing their opening set 3-6 to Leamington's Raynor & Gildove and took the second set 6-1. By this time the other rubber had finished and as Stratford couldn't be caught they agreed to share the rubber. So the final score was 3 1/2 - 1/2 to Stratford who retained the Charity Cup for the Summer League to add to their Summer League Premier Division title for 2013.

The Cup and individual awards were presented by the Secretary of the Winter League Alan Colbourne and the Chairman of both Leagues and WLTA Secretary Tony Eskew presented the £100 cheque, awarded this year by the Summer League, to Stratford who donated it to the Starlight Foundation Children's Charity.
