Goals from Rob Tomlinson and Jack Lees gave Brocton a 2-1 win over Bromsgrove Sporting in midweek that sent the Badgers 6 points clear at the top of the Midland Combination Premier Division so they came into this Staffs FA Vase Tie with North West Counties side Leek CSOB riding high.

However it was Leek CSOB who were first into their stride and whilst no shots at goal resulted during the early spell, Brocton were reduced to chasing the game and their visitors looked confident that chances would come.

Dan Shore cut in from the right and with good control did get a shot away for Brocton. He was off target but it was the combination of Oliver Mellor and Ryan Ball for Leek which produced the best early opening and it took some good defending by Matt Skinner and Dave Ablewhite to see off the danger.

The Badgers got their noses in front ten minutes later when Dan Shore took the ball with his back to goal and under heavy pressure showed great strength to beat keep Rob Hackney with a  left foot shot as defenders tried to drag him back.

Shore was involved again moments later when, finding his own route to goal blocked, he laid the ball into Lukas Putka’s path, but this time the shot from Putka was well saved low to the keeper’s left.

Gary Fife could not be kept out of the goal mouth action for long and after good work between Jethro Jarrett and Liam Haycock, the ball was slipped into Fife’s path but the shot had to be taken quickly and went over the bar.

CSOB put some pressure on the Badgers goal after a long throw from some 30 yards landed in the box. The half clearance was fired goalwards but keeper Adam Whitehouse leapt well and caught the ball high under the bar.

On 41 minutes, Dan Lomas picked a pass from right touch line to left to find Jamie Evans with room to advance. He did and his path opened up as Jarrett and Haycock spun off to give him passing options. The visitors defence had backed off but began to hear alarm bells as his run reached the edge of the box and attempted to close him down but he got in a right foot shot that was inches the wrong side of the post with Hackney beaten.

A fine Brocton move with passes between Fife, Lomas, Fife again, Shore and finally a Fife shot produced the save of the match from Hackney but the Badgers were not to be denied for long.

Jarrett won the ball in midfield through sheer determination and he quickly found Fife. Fife slipped the ball to Shore and the big centre forward swivelled on the proverbial sixpence and fired an unstoppable shot past across Hackney and into the bottom corner of the net to send Brocton in 2-0 up at the break.

CSOB were unlucky not to score ten minutes into the second period when a corner was met at the near post by Ashley Williscroft, only to see the effort hit the outside of the post. The visitors’ fate was sealed a few minutes later when Jethro Jarrett intercepted the ball in midfield and slipped it forward early to beat the offside trap and send Fife clear. The prolific marksman produced his usual clinical finish in the one on one with Hackney to give Brocton an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The blow knocked the fight out of CSOB and Brocton stroked the ball around with ease in the final half hour without adding to their goal tally despite two close efforts from fullback Dave Ablewhite who looked determined to get amongst the scorers.
