Yesterday (Sunday 17th April) the under 9s Pirates teams took part in the annual Kings Norton Rugby Tournament and emerged as overall winners. I have put together a short report below and attached a couple of photos.
The Old Halesonians Pirates (under 9s) made a short trip across to Kings Norton RFC for the annual mini's rugby tournament. With teams from 7 other clubs taking part it promised to be a good competitive day of rugby for the guys. Teams were initially split into 2 pools of 5 teams with the top 3 each progressing through to the later stages of the competition and and the chance to compete for silver wear. With a team in each pool we were hopeful of making the top 3 in one of the groups. First up were the host Kings Norton Red team, Old Hales were quickly into their stride with some fantastic tackling and defence forcing the turnover, this was the story for the whole of the first game with Old Hales emerging as 8 try's to 0 winners. Next up were Bromsgrove who we knew would prove a stiff test having played them twice already this season with both games being very close. Old Hales continued the good performance from the first game with some solid defence and moving the ball quick in attack seeing the guys through for a 5 try's to 0 victory. The final pool game was against Droitwich who were the current holders of the Kings Norton title. A great hard fought game from both clubs ensured, but again a sound defensive display forcing Doritwich on to the back foot Old Hales were able to keep their noses in from finishing as 3 try's to 2 winners, meaning Old Hales topped the pool progressing to the final. We didn't fair quite so well in the other pool in terms of results, however we saw some real improvement in the players involved and a number of our goals achieved for the day so an overall success in the eyes of the coaches.
Kings Norton Black topped pool A and provided the opposition for the final. A fantastic match insured with both teams tight in defence constantly putting pressure on the attacking team. Old Hales forced the first mistake and a missed tackle in midfield created some space and Old Hales found the gap to score the first try. Kings Norton came back strong and some good passing down the line saw them go over in the corner. With the score tied at 1 try each at half time the game was evenly poised. Old Hales started the brighter in the second half, some excellent offloading in the tackle allowed space to be created and a try scored, making the scores 2 try's to 1 to Old Hales. Kings Norton came back strong twice forcing over the Old Hales try line only to be driven back with a try being conceded. The pressure finally told in the final minute with Kings Norton making it over in the corner to bring the scores level and the final whistle soon followed. A quick check of the rules confirmed that we would be playing a golden try extra time, with the first team to score be crowned as overall winners. Old Hales won the coin toss and started with the ball, a handling error straight from the start handed the ball to Kings Norton who were soon on the attack, again Old Hales showed why they had only conceded 4 try's all day with a series of great tackles forcing Kings Norton backwards. Kings Norton then spotted some space on the outside wing but a fantastic cover tackle took the player and ball in to touch meaning a turnover and a chance for Old Hales to attack which they did at pace again offloading in the tackle to creat space and scoring in the corner to win the game 3 try's to 2.
A fantastic day of rugby from all the teams involved, and real squad effort from Old Hales U9s to walk away as Tournament winners 2016.
