A nine over spell of robust, positive batting steered Leamington to a welcome first Premier Division win.

Seeking to defend a modest total of 107, Catherine de Barnes looked to pressure the early batsmen, but with a series of full-bloodied drives and pulls, Rob Ainscow (52), well supported by David Lord pushed the field ever deeper.

When Ainscow departed with the score at 79, Lord (36) took the lead and steered Leamington to within five runs of victory.  The loss of three wickets for a single run set nerves jangling, but as the rain became ever heavier Leamington scrambled home.  That they had such a modest total to chase was very much due to the bowling of Dan McCarthy (5-22) who bowled excellently in the difficult blustery condition.

Two wickets in his second over set-back the visitors’ innings and when he later returned to the attack three wickets in two overs  brought it to a swift end.  McCarthy was well supported by Jagdeep Khunara who took 3 for 25 in his 10 over spell.
