Worcestershire & Herefordshire reclaimed the Iskitz Three Counties Championship title by routing holders Shropshire 63-15 at Newport’s Forton Road ground today.

The win followed a 57-10 victory over Shropshire in a group match last month and scuppered Shropshire’s hopes of winning the title for a fourth successive season.

The win was based on a hat-trick of tries from Kidderminster Carolians centre George Morgan but Worcestershire & Herefordshire had to come from behind to take the title after Shrewsbury fly-half Tom Cookson kicked Shropshire into a 12-0 lead.

But tries from Morgan and Worcester Wanderers flanker Tom Dodge settled W&H and helped them into a 15-12 lead at half-time.

The second half was a one-sided affair as Worcestershire & Herefordshire ran in seven unanswered tries against a Shropshire side who were unable to call on players from Newport and Bridgnorth, their two highest-ranked clubs.

Morgan added two more tries with his younger brother Arthur also crossing. Dodge also got a second try with Old Halesonians full-back Andy Holloway, Old Halesonians prop Matt Young and Kidderminster Carolians scrum-half Chris Pinner scoring one each.

Evesham fly-half Mike Diston, who took the man of the match award, kicked a penalty and five conversions and Sam Hopkins (Evesham) a penalty and a conversion.

The Iskitz Three Counties Championship is contested annually by the Domestic Unions –Greater Birmingham are the third –  that make up the North Midlands RFU and is generously sponsored by Malvern-based international sports kit suppliers.
