North Midlands will play Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire and Berkshire in the inaugural Women’s County Championship in May.

The pilot competition has been set up with RFU approval with the aims of raising standards in women’s rugby across the country, to allow players to play at higher level than their clubs and to recognise the contribution that counties make to the development of rugby in England.

North Midlands will begin their County Championship programme with an away game against Buckinghamshire on May 1 and then play successive home matches against Gloucestershire on May 8 and Berkshire on May 15. All venues have yet to be confirmed.

North Midlands will begin their preparations next month with the first of five development days on January 31.

Those will be followed by trials at Five Ways OE on April 17 and two squad sessions before the Buckinghamshire opener.
