Worcestershire County Cricket League

Summary of results Saturday 9th August 2014

A full programme with only a few weather interruptions apart from the miserable statistic that a record seven games were conceded to opposition in Divisions six-nine.

In Division One 1st XIs, on 19th July, three weeks ago, Worcester were just 1 point in front of Pershore but three straight wins coupled with some unusually poor results for Pershore now see them 57 points clear at the top, surely with one foot in the Birmingham league for next season.

This week, Worcester travelled to Harvington and wrapped up a huge win as the home side stayed locked in the bottom three. They are now 5 ahead of Evesham who could not quite complete a win at home to fellow strugglers Bromyard who closed on 123-9 in reply to Evesham’s 219-6. The bottom up now reads Bromyard 93 points, Evesham 107, Harvington 112, Redditch 118 and Droitwich 125 in what could be the most exciting relegation dogfight for years as these five sides have to play at least two of the other four during the final six games, five of which are win/lose shoot-outs!

Worcester Nomads stayed 3rd behind Pershore as they eased to a 10 wickets win at Redditch thanks to six wickets from Dominic Badger and 100 not out from Sam Roberts. Pedmore also gained a maximum by beating Pershore at home with 5 wickets from Dan Cooper so they remain 6 back from Nomads, both are now within a win of Pershore. Next come Hagley for whom James Spavin cracked 111 in his side’s monster 353-6 which was plenty to see off Belbroughton.

In the final match, Colwall lost a little ground in 6th place as they were unable to remove the final Droitwich wicket in a winning draw.

Next week, the final round before “win/lose” returns, the bottom five must all play against higher placed opposition so, some will need to put a little form together soon if they are to escape the Division two trap-door!

Division Two 1st XIs – Burghill tightened their grip on this Division by beating fifth placed Lye quite comfortably whilst Bewdley were losing at Feckenham, despite 94 from Rob Combes and Feckenham themselves lifted relegation worries in the process.

Burghill now lead by 47 points and Bewdley are still 32 in front of Oldswinford who got a winning draw to leapfrog 4th placed rivals, Worcester Dominies and now lead them by 3 points with Dominies 23 ahead of Lye.

Elsewhere, Cookley had a faster run rate than Wormelow thanks mainly to Paul Thomas’s 105 not out and Coombs Wood eased their problems with a win at Enville. The basement battle was won by Malvern who beat Rushwick by 110 runs despite 95 from Chris Pearman and Malvern now head their rivals by 23 points but are 30 behind Coombs Wood.

Division Three 1st XIs – leaders Harborne drew with Stourport which has allowed Bredon to jump into 2nd place, 20 adrift of Harborne and 11 in front of Stourport.

At Harborne, Usman Hussain made 96 and Spencer Colley replied with 110 for Stourport but neither ended up on the winning side. Bredon’s Tim McVicker scored 112 as his side beat Avoncroft but Netherton stay 4th as they could not capitalise on Stourport’s slip, losing at home to Old Vigornians by one wicket in the final over.

In other matches, Ross beat Tenbury, Alveley eclipsed Cleobury and Chaddesley defeated Alvechurch and Hopwood.

Division Four 1st XIs – Bartestree and Lugwardine beat Romsley easily and are now 56 points ahead of Himbleton and surely headed for Division three. Kidderminster had a losing draw at home to Martley which allowed Himbleton to leapfrog them into second place.

Himbleton’s huge score of 357-3 declared was primarily comprised of 171 scored by Luke Brace and 112 not out from Alistair Pretty and Claverley have also caught up with Kidderminster, as well as overtaking Bromsgrove, by winning at Five Ways.

Bottom side Oldswinford won at Halesowen to close the gap on Romsley to 2 points and in the final match, Dan Durman made 82 for Himley who then had Harry Roberts fantastic analysis of 10.4-4-13-6 to thank for bowling out Bromsgrove to win by 34.

Division Five 1st XIs started their final round of win/lose matches and it’s now officially a two horse race after Barnards Green inflicted a first defeat on Kempsey by 4 wickets and they are now just 3 points behind with three matches left.

In other games, Hanley stayed 3rd by beating Barnt Green with 113 scored by Will Chambers, Astwood Bank are 4th after a win over Old Elizabethans, Stourbridge beat Stourport and West Malvern thrashed bottom placed Hallow.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one leaders Colwall did not need the additional time they set aside to beat Droitwich and so stayed 14 points clear of Stourport at the top. Stourport beat Cookley and Nomads and Hagley recorded wins over Redditch and Belbroughton respectively. For Nomads, Guy Davies scored 107 not out after Bryan Melliard had recorded 97 for Redditch.

Hagley and Nomads are 4 points behind Stourport so 18 from Colwall and after them comes Pedmore, 12 further back after they could only manage a winning draw at Rushwick who ended up just 6 short of victory with one wicket left. In the final match, Bewdley beat Evesham.

In Division two,  none of the three leading sides won as Enville had a losing draw with Coombs Wood, Bromyard had a similar result at home to Feckenham in a match that totalled over 650 runs and Netherton missed their chance to go top, being beaten at Pershore. So the top three are covered by just 3 points and even Worcester in 6th , who may well be getting an elevation in status next season, along with the 1st XI, are only a win away from the lead.

In the other games, Alvechurch closed the gap by beating Lye, Worcester beat Harborne and Oldswinford climbed out of the bottom two by winning at Worcester Dominies.

Division three 2nd XI leaders Burghill stayed 34 ahead of Bartestree at the top by beating Chaddesley, thanks to 101 from Ryan Knight and Bartestree beat Romsley to make this look like a Herefordshire one-two. However, Bredon are 10 adrift of second place after winning at Avoncroft and Wormelow, who drew with Harvington, are now 4th, 3 ahead of yesterday’s opponents. The final match saw a win for Claverley over Malvern.

Division four 2nds leaders Martley lost at home to Kidderminster so Bromsgrove who beat Cleobury Mortimer have grabbed the lead back. They now lead Martley by 8 points which is the same margin that Martley hold over Kidderminster and they are just 2 in front of Old Vigornians who beat Five ways who are 38 points further back.

The last matches saw a win for Old Hill over Himbleton and w inning draw for still winless Tenbury at home to Ross on Wye.

Division five 2nds – Barnards Green and Stourport stay top after the beat Kempsey and Stourbridge respectively. Barnards Green are 9 points in front and Stourport are now 53 ahead of Stourbridge. For Green, Cyril Dean scored 104.

In other games, Hallow’s Dave Pugh scored 112 not out as his side moved off the foot of the table with a 67 run win over West Malvern. Barnt Green, who lost at Hanley Castle are the new side at the bottom and in the final match, Chris Perkins of Astwood Bank scored 136 as his team beat Old Elizabethans to jump two places.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Division six, Canon Frome, Birlingham, Cutnall Green and Ombersley all won again, so they are still 55 ahead of Harborne who beat Highley. Canon Frome’s match at home to Rushwick was conceded, only the second concession in this division and Birlingham beat Droitwich who have slipped to 3rd from bottom, just 2 in front of Netherton who lost a high scoring game at Ombersley and 6 ahead of Stone who were Cutnall Green’s victims. Next week the top four play each other and some important issues may get sorted at Canon Frome who play Ombersley and at Cutnall Green who entertain Birlingham.

Division seven is still very close after Nomads got a winning draw at Worcester and so lead by 6 points with 3 rounds left. Hagley are 3rd after a conceded win and Enville thrashed Pedmore to stand 4th just 13 off the lead just 3 in front of Pershore who had their match conceded by Malvern. Redditch had a winning draw with Belbroughton.

Division eight leaders Evesham need just one point from their final match to win the title after they beat rivals Bewdley by 7 wickets with Jack Haines scoring 98 not out. Colwall had a winning draw, Cookley were conceded to by Dominies and Harborne beat Kidderminster.

Division nine leaders Redditch and Enville again both had matches conceded to them, Redditch’s 6th as did Feckenham who were due to receive Harvington. The only match played was at Fiveways who had a losing draw with Bredon. It looks very much as if Redditch will win the title having played just two matches, surely something will need to change in 2015 to prevent so many concessions.
